Our Story

We Built the Classroom
We Wished We Had

Novo Lishon was born from a simple frustration: we wanted to learn Portuguese, but every app felt like a lonely game of flashcards. Where was the professor who could explain why? Where were the classmates to laugh with when we messed up?

The Spark

It started in a tiny café in Lisbon. One of us was trying to order a galão (that's Portuguese for a latte, but served in a tall glass). The barista smiled patiently as we butchered the pronunciation for the third time.

“You're learning Portuguese?” she asked. We nodded, embarrassed. “From an app?” Another nod. She laughed kindly. “Those apps... they teach you words, but not how to bePortuguese. You need a professor. You need to hear the rhythm.”

She was right. We had memorized hundreds of words but couldn't hold a simple conversation. We knew vocabulary but not culture. Grammar rules but not the exceptions that every native speaker uses.

That's when we asked ourselves: What if we could bring the best parts of a real classroom—great teachers, engaging classmates, cultural immersion—to anyone, anywhere, anytime?

What We Believe

These aren't just company values—they're lessons we learned the hard way on our own language journeys.

Passion for Languages

We fell in love with Portuguese while struggling through traditional apps. We knew there had to be a better way.

Learning Together

The best classrooms have energy. Classmates who ask questions, make mistakes, and celebrate wins together.

Real Teachers Matter

Great professors do more than drill vocabulary. They inspire, explain context, and adapt to each student.

Culture is Key

Language without culture is just words. We weave Portuguese traditions, humor, and daily life into every lesson.

Built by Learners, for Learners

We're not just building Novo Lishon—we're using it every day to continue our own Portuguese journey.

The Founders

Language Learners First

We started Novo Lishon after years of frustration with apps that felt like games but never led to real fluency. We wanted the classroom experience without the classroom limitations.

Our Mission

To make high-quality language education accessible to everyone by recreating the magic of a great classroom—complete with inspiring professors, supportive classmates, and deep cultural immersion—powered by AI but grounded in proven teaching methods.

Join Our Journey

Fun fact: “Novo Lishon” combines “Novo” (Portuguese for “new”) with a playful take on “Lisbon”—the city where our journey began and where our hearts remain. It also sounds like “New Lesson” if you say it fast enough. We like that.
